From 22 to 24 October 2008 the Centre for Sustainable Management of Resources has organised the final conference of Freude am Fluss, entitled “Space for the river, space for people?“. The conference was held in the city of Nijmegen, Netherlands, at congress centre ‘De Vereeniging’ and in the city’s Town hall. Participants involved in related (European) projects were given the opportunity to present and exhibit their results during the academic conference and the lunch of the Meeting of the Mayors.
You can find additional information on the discussed topics, presentations and photos of each part of the programme under ‘Programme and proceedings’ and ‘Photo Reel’. The item ‘Papers and abstracts’ will be continuously updated as more papers are finalized. For more information, use the menu on the left. In case you require additional information, see the menu item ‘Contact information’.
Goal of the project:
The European project Freude am Fluss stands for a new approach in flood risk management.
- Development of innovative techniques for the adaptation of housing, land use and human activity on the floodplain
- Development of a joint planning approach
Naturally, this approach raises new concerns and challenges. The Freude am Fluss answer to these concerns and challenges is international cooperation.
Taking part in this European endeavour are universities, governmental and water authorities, local communities, and public organizations from France, Germany and the Netherlands. The EU sponsors the Freude am Fluss project as part of its Interreg III-B programme.
In short, Freude am Fluss is an innovative concept that can fundamentally change the way our river basins are being managed.
